Journal Entry:

After nearly a week of early mornings we finally got to sleep in a bit. At breakfast we discovered that the camp site is almost infested with yellow jackets - as soon as the food came out they moved in. From the camp site we drove down to the lookout at Hilina Pali. It has a great view down the escarpment to the sea 2,500 feet below. We hiked around a bit but the overcast skies didn't clear. Next we drove back around the crater rim the other direction, stopping at Keanakāko'i Crater, Halema'uma'u Crater, and the Southwest Rift, and getting water at the museum. At the Volcano House we hired a shower key - $4 each a day seemed a bit steep but we decided it was worth it. After a shower we made diner at the other camp to avoid the yellow jackets. After dark we went back down to see the lava again. It was a whole different experience. First of all the site had changed a lot - there was lava flowing around where we'd stood the night before. Also there were tons more people - it was very crowded. It was a different flow - mostly more subtle and with less wind so the lava was harder to see through the steam. Still it was amazing to see how quickly it changed - right before we left we watched a new flow open up and break out into a river of molten rock. Incredible!
