We got up early (again) but missed the first shuttle to the airport. We caught the second shuttle and were still able to get seats. Once again we got checked in the random security screening. After the unexciting hour flight we got to Hilo (on the Big Island) and rented a car. It took us a while to find Maria's house (Maria is a friend of Stacy's who does work on Pohnpei occasionally). Maria and her housemate Abegardo are out of town so they'd left us a key and instructions to make ourselves at home. We found and borrowed some camping gear and set off again. We stopped at Wailuku River State Park to see the waterfalls, then did some shopping for the trip. The drive down the Volcanoes National Park was pretty and quick - less than an hour. At the park we stopped at the headquarters, drove half way around the rim road, saw Muliwai a Pele on the Chain of Craters Road. We set up camp at Kulanaokuaiki, then headed back down the Chain of Craters Road. We stopped at the Hōlei Sea Arch - very pretty, but the main show was further down the road - where we got to watch lava rolling into the sea - it was incredible!
