Journal Entry:

The plan had been to do a big hike today - but after a late start we put it off until tomorrow. The yellow jackets were bad at breakfast again. We went back to the view point at Hilina Pali, but it was overcast again by the time we got there. We explored the vent chimneys at Kīpuka Kahāli'i - odd structures that almost looked like fairy houses. We drove down the the end of the chain road again and hiked out to the Pu'u Loa Petroglyphs field. The petroglyphs were pretty interesting and it was amazing to wander around and find them on random rocks. After Pu'u Loa we decided to visit the lava flow one last time - this time in the day light. It was interesting and still amazing, but not the sound and light show that it was at night. We drove as far up Mona Loa as possible to see the big picture view, but when we got up there the clouds kept us from seeing much of anything. We went on another short hike so that we wouldn't feel the trip was a waste. Back in the main part of the park we took another shower then headed into Volcano Village for a nice diner at the Thai restaurant. We were running very low on gas so were distressed to find all the gas stations closed - we made it back to the camp but I'm worried about tomorrow.
