Rowing:
I prefer sweep rowing, after all if God had meant
for us to scull we'd have four arms, right? My two favorite
Regattas are the San Diego Crew Classic and the Head of the
Charles. The HOC because of the history and the sheer
magnitude, the Crew Classic because it used to be my
backyard.

Swimming:
When I was about five I was trying to learn to swim, but just couldn't do it. One day the next door neighbor (who was watching us kids) got fed up and threw me in.
I had the option of sinking or swimming and to my surprise I chose to swim. (Thanks Marcie! Um, but you would have pulled me out if I didn't, right?!?) I started swimming competitively
when I was in high school. By the time I graduated I thought that I was bored with it, and it was time to try something new (hence the rowing, above). Then August '94 I
injured my ankle and wasn't able to do my normal work out, so I thought I'd try swimming again. Much to my surprise I found I really loved it. Since then I've been swimming on and off with various teams and on my own.
The Ocean:
I love the ocean. It is the single thing I miss every day now that I live in Seattle. We have Puget Sound, but it's not the same.
Favorite Ocean Activities:
SCUBA diving
Body Surfing
Board Surfing
Snorkeling / Free diving
Favorite Beach Activities:
Just lying there
Beach Combing
Sand Volleyball

Sailing:
I sail for fun. I've never done any racing (not that I'd be opposed
to it). I started sailing when I was 15. I started working on the
Argus, a 1907 topsail rigged ketch that was owned and
operated by the Boy Scouts of America as a floating camp. Since
then I've done some sailing on Hobbie cats, and a variety of sloops.
My old roommate owns a forty foot sloop, which is lots of fun, but my
heart still belongs to the wooden vessels of yesterday.
Wakeboarding / Water skiing:
It's not surf, but it is fun. During the summer water skiing helps me get my water fix. This helps me minimize those costly flights to the beach.
The Outdoors:
Hiking:
I love hiking. Every once in a while I get really fed up with the world. Times like that the only thing to do is get away. It's
amazing what a couple of hours in the wilderness by myself can do for my soul.
The Nth photo - above - is me on Angel's Landing, Zion National Park (May 1997) - See larger image in journalThe Nth photo - above - is me hiking Franz Josef Glacier, New Zealand (April 2000) - See larger image in journalThe Nth photo - above - is me and the boys hiking in Yakima (May 2016)The Nth photo - above - is the family hiking at Ancient Lakes, Washington (September 2016)The Nth photo - above - is me at Crystal Lake, Mammoth, CA (August 2017)The Nth photo - above - is Ollie and I on an evening hike in Bryce Canyon (June 2018)
Camping:
Sometimes a day hike isn't enough. Or sometimes I feel as if I
deserve a special treat. Then it's time to go camping. First off
if it's in a car it's not camping, if there's a picnic table it's
not camping. Camping is with a backpack. On a trail. Someplace a
long way from humanity in general. My two favorite places to go
back-packing are The Subway in Zion national park,
Utah; and Paradise in Mt. Rainier national park,
Washington.
The Nth photo - above - is me at Camp Muir on Mt. Rainier (September 1994)The Nth photo - above - is me comptemplating a new kind of camping - getting started on building out our new Sprinter (November 2020)
Biking:
Ok, I really am not a big biker. But I do enjoy it on a summer
day. It's sort of like hiking, only faster and more social.
Before kids once a summer I'd go biking with a group of
friends. We'd load up our bikes with camping gear and catch a ferry
for the San Juan islands. The rest of the weekend was spent riding, camping,
whale watching, eating, relaxing, and island hopping.
The Nth photo - above - is me enjoying my morning latte on one such trip (circa 1995)
Skiing:
Skiing is fun. Skiing is not my reason for living. To me skiing
has always been a consolation to get me through the winter. Of
course a lot of my friends think I'm crazy, and I do always have fun,
but I could really do without the crowds.
More recently (but still before kids) Stacy was known to drag me out
for cross country skiing. More work, maybe not as much fun, but
rewarding and no crowds (not to mention cheaper.)
