Journal Entry:
Despite the early wake up we had a kind of late start - spent the morning reserving a kayak for tomorrow night, arranging a dive for tomorrow, a hotel for when we get back to Honolulu, and a hotel for tonight. We did some shopping, got gas, and head north out of Hilo -through the ?? coast. The drive was beautiful, but we kept on missing turns. We'd planned a hike and some beach time, but ended up in the interior in Waiemea. After a snack headed for the coastal route to the Kona coast. However we missed another turn and ended up taking the direct route. Since we were there early we went to see the Kona Coffee Collective, but they closed as we got there. Also tried to check out a macadamia nut roaster - also closed. Since we're going to be trying to kayak early in the morning we checked out the launching site. Checked into our hotel - it's a very funky pink hundred year old rambling building - I love it, but it's pretty odd - no locks on the doors. We went into town for diner. We were hoping to see the sunset, but low lying clouds got in the way. so no sunset. We wandered around looking for a place to eat - everything is very expensive, a chain, or both. We ended up at a chain - it wasn't very good. After diner we tried to find the Kona Surfers Resort - the guide book says it has bright lights that the mantas like to play in. It took us about half an hour to find it - where the guards told us that it had closed two years ago.
